A PUBLIC hand sanitizer...what a GREAT idea.

(click image, via) DDB Vancouver placed this interactive germ collection/distribution kiosk in a local mall on behalf of Pacific Blue Cross. Because, yes absolutely, I want to stick my hands on that container which has been fondled by scores of fluey adults, sick children, homeless wanderers with hepatitis, etc. just to get a little squirt of supposed anti-bacterial lotion. Hope the goop works, and/or the container isn't empty! Jesus, how stupid. Previously: Christian Slater, walking talking germ. Related: H1N1Vertising: Mexico City. Sydney.

We have these in our office. They work like hand dryers in public restrooms -- there's a sensor underneath that dispenses the lotion/sanitizer when there's movement; you don't have to touch any part of it.

So it actually seems like a pretty good idea, *especially* in a public place where you'll likely be touching doors, countertops, etc.

Yeah, and I'm sure NOBODY'S hands touch the container at all ever. In an office is a good idea. In the middle of a big shopping mall, no.

I love reading your blog, but sometimes you play the annoyed asshole way too strong, and you refuse to give up when people let you know that you're wrong. The truth is that you don't have to get anywhere near these things to get the hand sanitizer; you'd know this if you ever interacted with one. They've been deployed all over college campuses, hospitals, etc. They are clear in front so that you can tell if they're empty. They use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer so there is no questioning their ability to kill germs, and there is little opportunity for resistance-building. Simply put, there is nothing wrong with these things; if anything, they get all the design elements right.

That you again Jalan? OK, if you say so. I still don't think making one part of an soulless insurance behemoth's ad kiosk in a mall is a smart idea.

Btw, I really am not on-board with the whole public hand sanitizer concept, I'm not "playing." At least, not this time.

You continue to be a complete fucking idiot. It's motion-sensor hand sanitizer dispenser. No touching involved.

Continue with the douchebag asshole rhetoric. Whens the next 9/11-NYC post??

I have to agree - you've just been proven wrong on this one. It's a motion-sensor hand sanitizer dispenser. Nothing really wrong with it. My one concern (that they build up resistance in bacteria) is that I had before is actually incorrect. There's really nothing wrong with it.

Right, right Alex, BUT anon before him: thank you, 9/11! A Vancouver Al-Qaeda cell could infiltrate DDB, the ad agency, and fill that thing with liquid anthrax. OR, the terrorists could just pry it open, and replace the lotion with liquid C2 so's that I'd blow my hands off!

Also, it's "when's" not "whens"

New York fuckface, absolutely. But, pretentious? ME? I'm the son of true Appalachian Trail hillbillies. Thanks for continuing to read, btw.

You aren't making money or getting free advertising from me so thanks, I will continue to read. Usually I just look at the pictures but sometimes the drivel that comes off your brain and onto the keyboard is just fucking amazing.

Actually, that's not true. You increase my traffic; my traffic is what got me my paid daily posting gig at Animal NY, and, if I ever quit my ad job, my traffic is what will help me get another weekly ad column like I had for a year at Gawker.

Btw, you're from Chicago, aren't you?

Where are your manners???

I was greatly offended by the harsh and vulgar exchanges with the 'ranter', so on his behalf, I would like to throw some muck back at you, and in Polish, a language familiar to your windy city:

odpierdol sie chuju bo ci zapierdole
- fuck off you dick or I'll fuck you up

dupek
- asshole

matkojebca
- mother fucker

pizda
- pussy

No one has commented that antibacterial products like the one dispensed kill off the good skin bacteria too and cause resistant germs to flourish. So I will.
